Furnace Puff-Back Cleanup
Oil furnace misfire blew oily soot through ductwork and into living spaces.
Puff-backs happen on oil furnaces when a misfire ignites accumulated unburned oil. The pressure pushes oily soot OUT through the ductwork - everywhere. Distinguishable from regular smoke by the sticky black coating on surfaces, especially around HVAC registers.

How Catalyst handles puff-back
- Step 1
Coordinate with HVAC service
Furnace must be inspected and serviced before HVAC goes back on.
- Step 2
Specialized oil-soot cleaning
Oily residue requires solvent cleaning - water-based products spread it.
- Step 3
Full duct cleaning
Mandatory - the soot is IN the ductwork, not just on surfaces.
- Step 4
Hydroxyl deodorization
Oil-residue odor takes days to weeks to fully clear.
Generally covered as a sudden mechanical failure event. Some carriers categorize differently - we frame the claim correctly based on policy language.
