Burst Pipe Water Damage
Burst supply line, ceiling collapse, or active flooding from a broken pipe.
Burst pipes are the most common Cat-1 water loss we respond to. A single 1/2-inch supply line can dump 50 gallons per hour. The damage compounds fast - drywall, insulation, hardwood, subfloor, and any contents below get progressively worse the longer water sits.
First-hour checklist
- 1
Shut off the main water supply at the meter or street box (your insurer expects you to take this step).
- 2
Cut power to the affected area at the breaker if water is near outlets, switches, or ceiling fixtures.
- 3
Move salvageable contents up and out - electronics, photos, documents, soft goods.
- 4
Photograph everything before you move it. The before-photos are critical for the insurance claim.
- 5
Call us at 240-291-8439. We dispatch within 30-90 minutes depending on your distance from Hagerstown.
- 6
File the claim with your insurance carrier in parallel - we coordinate directly with the adjuster from there.
How Catalyst handles burst pipe
- Step 1
Stop the water + secure the structure
If the supply is still live, we assist shutoff. If ceiling has collapsed, we secure the structure before extraction.
- Step 2
Bulk water extraction
Truck-mount or portable extractors pull standing water. The first 48 hours of extraction prevents 80% of secondary damage.
- Step 3
Selective demolition
Wet drywall (typically the lower 2-4 feet), saturated insulation, and unsalvageable flooring come out. We document everything for the carrier.
- Step 4
Drying with daily moisture mapping
Air movers + dehumidifiers + targeted heat. Daily readings on a moisture map until materials hit IICRC dry standard.
- Step 5
Final clearance + reconstruction handoff
Independent moisture readings document the dry standard. We hand off to your contractor (or coordinate ours) for reconstruction.
Burst pipes are typically a covered "sudden and accidental" peril under standard homeowner policies. Frozen-pipe bursts require that you maintained reasonable heat in the property. Mitigation is almost always reimbursable even without prior adjuster approval - your policy expects you to limit further damage.

Drying typically runs 3-5 days for an average single-room burst. Reconstruction (drywall replacement, painting, flooring) adds 1-3 weeks depending on scope. Total 2-4 weeks is typical.
Almost always yes - sudden and accidental water discharge is a standard covered peril. The exception is frozen-pipe bursts where the home was unheated. Mold growth from a burst pipe discovered weeks later may face partial denials.
Sometimes. Engineered hardwood usually has to come out. Solid hardwood that's been wet less than 24-48 hours can often be saved with specialized drying mats. Hardwood saturated for 72+ hours typically warps beyond saving.
