Basement Sewage Cleanup
Sewage standing in basement from main-line backup, sump failure, or floor drain backflow.
Basement sewage is the largest-scope sewage event we handle. Volume is often hundreds of gallons. Contamination spreads to anything stored in the basement - boxes, holiday decor, mechanical systems. Demolition scope routinely runs to lower 2-4 feet of all walls plus full flooring removal.
First-hour checklist
- 1
Do not enter the basement without PPE (eye protection, N95+, rubber boots, gloves at minimum).
- 2
Cut electrical at the breaker if water is near outlets or panels.
- 3
Move stored contents from basement perimeter only if you can do so safely with PPE.
- 4
Call us at 240-291-8439. Basement sewage gets immediate dispatch.

Call your plumber to confirm source resolution.
How Catalyst handles basement sewage
- Step 1
Hazard assessment + utilities
Electrical safety check, gas valve check (water heater, furnace), assessment of all stored contents.
- Step 2
Containment + air control
Full basement containment, negative-air HEPA + carbon, prevents odor + spore migration upstairs.
- Step 3
Bulk extraction
High-volume vacuum extraction. We handle disposal through certified biohazard channels.
- Step 4
Contents triage
Each item assessed: salvageable with cleaning, salvageable with specialized cleaning offsite, or dispose.
- Step 5
Demolition + antimicrobial + drying
Standard sewage demolition scope, two-stage antimicrobial, complete drying with daily moisture mapping.
Sewage backup rider required for coverage. Even with the rider, contents coverage often has separate sub-limits. We document everything thoroughly to maximize recovery within policy limits.
All carrier-specific claim guidanceBasement Sewage Cleanup — FAQ
Triaged item by item. Sealed plastic containers usually save the contents. Cardboard boxes are typically lost. Holiday decor on metal racks above flood line: salvageable. Anything porous that touched sewage: lost.
Depends on water level. Anything with electronics that got wet typically requires replacement (not just cleaning). Mechanical components above water line are usually fine. We coordinate with HVAC and plumber to assess.
No - the contamination doesn't stay confined. Spores migrate upstairs through air gaps, stair openings, and HVAC. Smell migrates too. Proper remediation is the only path forward.
