Main Sewer Line Backup
Sewage rising through floor drains, basement showers, or multiple fixtures simultaneously.
Main-line backups are catastrophic events. When the municipal connection or your home's lateral clogs, every drain in the house can backflow simultaneously. Basement floor drains are usually the first sign. The contamination spreads across whatever is on the basement floor and into walls behind it.

How Catalyst handles main line backup
- Step 1
Coordinate with plumber
Mainline must be cleared before remediation can complete - we sequence the work.
- Step 2
Containment + air filtration
Sealed containment of the basement, negative-air HEPA + carbon filtration to control odor.
- Step 3
Bulk extraction + disposal
Vacuum extraction of contaminated water and solids, certified biohazard disposal.
- Step 4
Demolition of porous materials
Drywall (typically lower 2-4 feet), insulation, carpet, padding, finished flooring.
- Step 5
Antimicrobial + drying + clearance
Two-stage antimicrobial, complete drying, surface sampling for verification.
Main-line sewer backup requires a sewer/drain backup rider on most policies. Coverage limits typically $5,000-25,000. Without the rider, this is fully out-of-pocket - and main-line cleanup runs $5k-50k+ depending on scope.
All carrier-specific claim guidanceMain Sewer Line Backup — FAQ
The blockage is downstream of all your fixtures - in the main line leaving the house, or in the municipal connection. Water from one drain backs up through the lowest available exit (usually basement drains).
Sometimes. If the blockage is in the city main (not your lateral), municipal liability may apply. We document for that claim. But your insurance is still your first source of coverage - you pursue municipal recovery later.
Install a backwater valve on your main lateral. Roughly $1,500-3,000 installed. Prevents municipal backflow from entering your home even if the city main backs up.
