Bathroom Mold Remediation
Mold in shower walls, around tubs, behind toilets, or in bathroom ceiling - typically humidity-driven.
Bathroom mold is the most common mold call we get. Almost always driven by chronic humidity and inadequate ventilation. The visible mold is usually just the surface presentation of growth that's already inside walls behind tile or in the ceiling cavity above the shower.
First-hour checklist
- 1
Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and 30 minutes after every shower.
- 2
Stop using bleach to clean visible mold - it doesn't address the root.
- 3
Photograph all visible mold before remediation.
- 4
Identify the moisture source - leaky shower pan, missing/damaged caulk, undersized exhaust fan, no fan at all.
- 5

How Catalyst handles bathroom mold
- Step 1
Moisture source identification
We test for shower-pan leaks, behind-tile moisture, ceiling-cavity humidity, exhaust-fan flow.
- Step 2
Selective demolition
Affected drywall, ceiling material, and sometimes tile come out. Behind-wall mold drives the scope.
- Step 3
Treatment + drying
EPA-registered antimicrobial, complete drying.
- Step 4
Ventilation upgrade scope
We assess and recommend exhaust fan upgrades, humidity sensors, or active dehumidification if appropriate.
- Step 5
Reconstruction handoff
Mold-resistant materials specified for the rebuild scope.
Bathroom mold from chronic humidity is rarely covered (treated as maintenance). Bathroom mold from a sudden plumbing leak is typically covered up to the mold sub-limit. We help frame the claim correctly when there's a covered cause.

Because the moisture source is still active. Mold grows where conditions allow. Until you fix the humidity (better ventilation, dehumidifier) or the leak (shower pan, caulk), the mold keeps returning.
If the mold is only on grout/caulk: probably yes, plus a ventilation upgrade. If the mold is also behind the tile or in the wall cavity: full remediation first, then retile.
Critical. An undersized or missing exhaust fan is the #1 cause of recurrent bathroom mold. Code requires ventilation in any bathroom without an operable window. We commonly recommend 80-110 CFM fans with a humidity sensor.
